Role of AR/VR in the education system: How technology is shaping India’s learning space – Karishma Jain, December 26, 2018.

What learning experience would you prefer, a chapter in a book telling you about Ancient Rome or a completely immersive virtual tour of an ancient Roman town? Most likely, you’d go for a Virtual Reality (VR) tour and so will millions of students all over the world. VR can be used to teach lots of things, from history to human anatomy. Now imagine that you want to teach biology to children; needless to say, getting them interested in the learning process can be difficult. But there’s a way out – you can use an Augmented Reality (AR) mobile app through which students will direct their smartphone cameras at images in their books and virtual objects will appear on smartphone screens. Educators can use augmented reality to teach whatever subject they need – from the alphabet to geography to chemistry.

Google opens next application programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ML Indian start-ups from March 2019 – India Today Web Desk, December 28, 2018.

The last date for application to the programme is January 31, 2019, Google said in a statement. Google on Wednesday i.e. December 26 opened applications for the next class of its “Launchpad Accelerator” mentorship programme for start-ups using Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ Machine Learning (ML) in India which is scheduled to commence in March 2019. The last date for application to the programme is January 31, 2019, Google said in a statement. Under the Launchpad Accelerator programme, start-ups that are using AI/ML to solve India’s needs, undergo an intensive in-person mentorship boot-camp, followed by customised support for three months. The selected start-ups in the second batch will be announced in February 2019, Google said. “Our Launchpad Accelerator programme is bringing best of our expertise, platforms, tools and core strengths including Machine Learning and AI, to help Indian start-ups build, scale and grow their offering,” said Paul Ravindranath, Product Manager, Launchpad Accelerator India.

Using Big Data to Transform Digital Navigation – Thomas Mellor, December 28, 2018.

This year, the maritime industry witnessed an important milestone in safety and situational awareness at sea, with the introduction of an ADMIRALTY high-density contour Electronic Navigational Chart (HD-ENC) for the UK’s Bristol Channel. Supported by recent advancements in big data technologies and a wealth of marine geospatial data collected and stored by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), these sophisticated charts support navigation through shallow water by displaying depth contours at one-meter intervals, allowing ECDIS to set safety contours at corresponding levels and with more granularity than has been previously seen with other charts. As they continue to spread, these advancements in digital navigation are likely to unlock economic benefits for many ports around the world, and have a profound impact on the safety of crews and cargoes.

Reindeer – Extending the Cloud Computing Landscape – Use The Bitcoin, December 29, 2018.

Reindeer is a revolutionizing platform that envisions to streamline the present cloud computing domain. It has leveraged the potential of blockchain technology to democratize the entire cloud computing process. The decentralized platform addresses critical challenges associated with cloud computing system dealing with high downtime, security threats, inflexibility, etc. to provide an ecosystem that solves all aforementioned inefficiencies. Reindeer envisions to be the Github of cloud design. Github is a unique tool that has augmented the software product development process for more than 27 Million engineers across the world by offering them an extensive information repository and an effective platform to collaborate. Reindeer is developing the same kind of repository for cloud design creators to encourage creative minds on a global scale. In its repository, the platform intends to gather high-quality designs by cloud design creators from around the world. The platform also has a rewards system wherein creators get rewarded for their efforts. The database will be freely accessible to individuals to facilitate the creation of online content based on their preferred configuration.

This AI teaches robots how to walk – Kyle Wiggers, December 31, 2018.

Artificially intelligent (AI) systems have imbued robots with the ability to grasp and manipulate objects with humanlike dexterity, and now, researchers say they’ve developed an algorithm through which machines might learn to walk on their own. In a preprint paper published on Arxiv.org (“Learning to Walk via Deep Reinforcement Learning “), scientists from the University of California, Berkeley and Google Brain, one of Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) research divisions, describe an AI system that “taught” a quadrupedal robot to traverse terrain both familiar and unfamiliar.

Blockchain Project’s Big Ideas Include Bike That Can Mine Crypto as You Cycle – Connor Blenkinsop, December 31, 2018.

A blockchain-based platform says it is the first that puts all users and ecosystem participants on an equal level, and has set out its vision for how its platform will develop in the coming months and years.

Transcendence describes its blockchain as open source and decentralized, and says it offers full compatibility with existing systems such as AmiCloud, an internet-based file storage and file sharing facility, and the indieGO app store. The company says it wants its platform to offer an open marketplace for developers and artists, giving content creators a way to interact through a decentralized messaging service that provides an option for private communication.

Global Artificial Intelligence Conference: Everything You Want To Know – December 31, 2018.

The AI conference is going to host more than 100 industry speakers on AI. The landscape of Artificial Intelligence is growing at an unprecedented pace, thanks to its remarkable applications and usage in the tech industry. In an effort to push the AI substance into all the sectors, the Global Big Data Conference is organizing its third conference on Artificial Intelligence in Santa Clara, CA. The 3rd Annual Global Artificial Intelligence(AI) Conference is scheduled for January 23rd, January 24th, & January 25th, 2019. Taking the feedbacks of the attendees into consideration, the organizers have decided to stretch the conference into three days, and the industry verticals will include Retail/E-Commerce/M-Commerce, Energy, Education, Finance, Healthcare/Pharma/BioTech, and more. The AI conference is one of its kind and offers a platform to all the practitioners to discuss AI effective techniques. Also, it’s also claimed to be the largest vendor agnostic conference in the AI domain.

Breakingviews – Blockchain will finally make itself useful – Tom Buerkle, December 31, 2018.

After all the hype, blockchain is due for a breakthrough in 2019. Banks and companies are gradually applying versions of the distributed-ledger technology associated with bitcoin to tasks like settlement. Demonstrating blockchain’s utility, though, will say little about the value of cryptocurrencies themselves. The technology’s potential for recording and sharing data instantly and securely has captured the imagination of the corporate and financial sector as well as anti-establishment libertarians. The latter dream of money that’s free from the grasp of banks or governments, while the former hope to replace aging back-office technology, increase efficiency and cut costs. Yet a decade after blockchain’s basics were laid down by the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto, no killer app has emerged.
